GALLERY
1956 to 2005
Gallery is a work in progress. The paintings and graphics from the past
are sold or saved--for viewing only.

These are a few examples, subject to change.
1939

"Airplane"

First grade teacher Ms. Lane
informs me that my first
drawing--airplane--is a
work of art. I'm officially,
an artist. This re-creation is
based on memory.
1956

"Seal Beach Locals"

After Chuck Hasley, Jack
Haley and Tim McElrath.
Dedicated to Blacky August
(riding the wave)
My first surf culture painting.
Long Beach State College.
Traded to Gordie for new
surfboard ($35 value-both
ways).
1956

"Four Surfers at
Trestles"

Another of the LB State
paintings going "surf
loose."

1958

"The Surfer"

My first surf block print.
Carved in Haleiwa.

"Surferguy" later
becomes logo for card
and surferart.
1958

"Brooks Street"

Movie subtitle for '58
film SURF.
1959

"Malibu Lizards"

A sketch for the new Surfer
Magazine, released in
1960.
1960

"Surfer Magazine"

A little art project to keep
me busy for a dozen
years.
1961

"Big Wednesday"

Moving into films and
Surfer magazine , my art
turns toward graphics.
1963

"Surf Be Bop"

In '64, Be Bop won the
Cover
Painting of TheYear,
an
award presented by
Communication Arts (CA)
Magazine.
1968

"Hot Curl

In the mid sixties, I
experimented with various
applications of paint,
including squeeze bottles,
in a decorative treatment.
1975

Bay Of Islands, N.Z.

One of the sketches from
the 8 month trip through the
Pacific.

Starting fresh,my drawings
became precise ,
and began
to move toward pointilism.
1976

"Pacific Wave"

First painting after the
Pacific trip took a year. It's
an acrylic pointilist wave
tribute,
with a rock to
slow the crowds. Hmm.
Hard on the eyes!
1977

Maui House

I built this sculptured "tree house," after the inspiration
of the
Pacific trip.
1978

"Starmaker"

A mix of detail and broad
strokes, as I paint my way
out of pointilism and sure
blindness.
1978

"Discovery"

Continuing the "Island
Dream" journey, I'm in transition toward
a looser surf style,
painting in oils.
1979

"Used Karma Lot"

This is one of my favorite
paintings, drawing on the
easy come-easy go of surf
cars, and the castaway lives
in the islands,
1979

"Rounding Kaena Point"

This is a seminal
painting for me, finding
broad, sweeping strokes
that seem to best capture
the spirit of surfing.
1980

"Free Forms"

Sweet and soft; almost
blowing away in the wind.
I'm going back to oils for
more of this.
1980

"California Dreaming"

Having owned over 50 cars, they continue to find their
way into my
painting;
this one a reminiscence,
painted on Maui.
1982

"Surf Train"

A graphic of multiple over-
lays, intended to be printed
on acetate. Perhaps now's
the time...
1985

"Perfect Rights"

With this painting, I feel I've
caught up with my '50s
casual, and learned a lot
about waves, land and plant
structures along the way.
1990

"Honolua Morning"

With a bad neck, I headed for
the golf course, combining
images at times.
1998

"Island Take-Off"
Aloha Shirt

Starting in '96, I began
designing aloha textiles,
with island and surf
motifs. Paintings became
shirts; shirt became
paintings.
2000

"Sunset Fifties"

Textile design led me to
watercolor, and it seemed
that I'd found the perfect
medium for surf. I traded the
toxic oils for a very tricky
medium. Enjoying the
conceptual stage of painting,
watercolors offered more.
2000

"Surf Wheels"

More cars, more fun. The
paintings are increasingly
autobiographical. I'm
especially struck by the
early north shore autos and
line-ups.

2000

"Golden Age"

Here's a flashback to "Seal
Beach Locals." It's a great
mulligan to get to repaint
your old paintings. I feel this
painting may be a window to
my painting future.
2002

"Roaring Rights"

The marriage of control and
accidentals in this painting
is a high point in my water-
color. United Airlines uses
the painting on the cover of
their Horizons in-flight
magazine.
2003

"Surf Fever"

Saving the old stoke for
posterity. Photos from
the '40s to the '00s
are surprisingly still
printable--many of these--the
building blocks of
Surfer Magazine.
2004

"Bull In Blue"

With the completion of my
photo book, Surf Fever, I
screen favorite images and
combine with painting.
They start fairly true to the
subject, but soon take off
into painted statements.
2004

"Off The Lip"

The "Take-Offs" take on a
abstract sculptural quality at
times, almost losing their photo identity.
2004

"Big Surf Event"

Collage' enters the scene.
Now the images are surfing
through a nostalgic '50s-'60s
surf milieu.
2005

"Jaws Dimensions"

I thought I'd painted waves
out of scale. As my waves
get bigger, surfers drop in to
match. My '06 waves need
to be upscaled.
